"we're slowly creeping out of recession and with that, premiums are going back up - 4% last year." but some say it's gone much higher. "15%, and i'm a small-business owner and i can't afford to pay health insurance for my employees right now." and in case you thought the healthcare debate was settled, it's not. only a portion of the reforms have been implimented. in 2014, states are scheduled to expand medicaid and set up health insurance exchanges to help people choose a plan. however, what will be included in coverage, known as "essential standard benefits," is still open for debate. to begin this morning with high stakes debate. all eyes turned to denver for tonight's first presidential debate of the 2012 race. and a new nbc/"wall street journal" poll finds president obama is hold on to his national lead. but not by very much. 49% of likely voters favor the president. while 46% prefer mitt romney. that's only a 3% edge for obama which is within the survey's margin of error. but when it comes to a pool of registered voter, the president widens his lead over romney by 7 points, 51% to 44%. now a national survey says the nation is headed into the right direction. both candidates took a break from their debate prep on tuesday to make a few unscheduled stops. nbc's steve handelsman reports from denver. >> reporter: the pressure is intense. president obama took time out for a visit to hoover dam. >> it's spectacular. i've never seen it before. >> reporter: mitt romney grabbed a burrito bowl. doug hudson, andrew lumpkin and chris conroy run bicycle companies in colorado. they took me out to red rocks. these guys will watch the debate. andrew hoping for a breakthrough by his

the last presidential -- the first presidential debate. obama now at 45%, romney at 49%. that's a significant shift from before the debate when the president was ahead by eight points, 51% to 43%. but let's dig a little bit deeper right now. this question, all likely voters who were asked answered, obama doesn't know how to turn the economy around, do you agree or disagree? 54% said they agree with that. 44% they say disagree. that sounds like trouble for the president's reelection campaign. >> that does. that number -- first of all, the top-line numbers are surprising because i believe pew has been a pr pre-pro obama poll. pew's been pretty good for obama. the top-line numbers are really surprising. have to see if other polls show the same thing. but as you point out, that's the key number, the economy. how does obama get out of this box of voters being not happy with the economy? but up until now, willing to perhaps give him another chance. i'm surprised. i'm surprised the debate turned things around, if they indeed have, that quickly. obama has two more debates to turn thin

of the first presidential debate between governor romney of massachusetts and president obama. you see both men being greeted by their wives on stage. even this portion of the debate is negotiated ahead of time by the campaigns in terms of which members of their family will be joining them on stage. this is, these these are negotiated down to this level of detail. in terms of how the overall debate unfolded, i personally do not know who won this debate. i do feel that we saw this debate format die a very painful death on camera tonight. the contrast between the candidates was stylistic as much as substantive. president obama i think calm and basically explanatory tonight. governor romney, more hyper, and i don't mean that in a negative way, just sort of more amped, more assertive. and that manifests in a way that the debate format was just dismantled. the format and i think the moderator, with all due respect to mr. lehrer dismantled. this is one of those debates, you could predict the score more by time of possession in terms of who was speaking more. then you could by any other individual pla
